President Muhammadu Buhari has fired the acting chairman of the Niger Delta Development Corporation (NDDC), Kemebradikumo Pondei.
Meanwhile, Effiong Awa, the commission’s finance director, has been appointed because the new chairman and would still lead the commission until the investigation ordered by Buhari is completed. This action is important as a result of various orders issued by a federal high court on the interim committee of the NDDC.
Recall that President Buhari appointed Pondei, a health professor, as chairman of the commission in February but his presidency was in turmoil.
Nigerian students abroad who have received scholarships through the commission have complained bitterly about the harassment and other allegations of corruption against the NDDC, Chairman and this have also prompted the Federal Parliament to launch a special inquiry, in which Pondei was mutilated while answering questions about the agency’s spending on coronation – including travel abroad.
