I Have No Plans To Contest For Second Term – Nonso Okafor

The lawmaker representing Nnewi North in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor has revealed that he has no plans to seek re-election for Anambra State House of Assembly.

Nonso Smart Okafor whose House of Assembly election victory in 2019 has remained indelible in the minds of the Nnewi populace has maintained that despite the pressures, he will not vie for the position in 2023.

The lawmaker who has been rated as the most performing lawmaker in the 7th Assembly due to his number of bills, motions, and projects, noted that his decision is basically as a result of the rotation arrangement in his town, Nnewi, which he plans not to kick against.

According to the young legislator, although there have been several arguments against the single term tradition of Nnewi, which commentators have said has reduced the chances of Nnewi lawmakers in occupying sensitive and important positions in the legislative chamber, he respects the decision of the town and will abide by it.

The former students union government leader who was a subject of discussion in the last Anambra Governorship election, has urged young people, especially from Uruagu-Nnewi extraction to wake up in the spirit of #NotTooYoungToRun and show the leadership they all clamour to see.

According to the rotation principle in Nnewi which is contained in section 6.3 subsection 3 of Nnewi constitution, it stipulates that if Nnewi town has only one seat at the State House of Assembly, the seat will be zoned to Umudim and that it will be rotated in the order of Nnewichi, Uruagu, Otolo, and then back to Umudim.

The rotation/zoning arrangement in Nnewi has continued to make it impossible for Nnewi representatives to attain principal positions in the Anambra State House of Assembly. The ranking rule of the House of Assembly has reserved the occupation of principal positions for old members.
