Asaba- Hon. Itiako Ikpokpo, (ksm), Chairman of Delta State Chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, has explained that the delay within the implementation of the new national minimum wage for local government workers and first school teachers within the State is caused by the present financial difficulties faced by Local Governments within the State.

Hon. Ikpokpo disclosed this in Asaba shortly after an emergency meeting of ALGON prior to the ultimatum issued by the leadership of the Delta State Chapter of the National Union of local government Employees, NULGE and also the primary school structures of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT and also the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, and noted that payment of primary school teachers and local government workers is squarely the responsibility of the Local Governments and not the Delta state government.
He however appealed to workers to shelve the proposed strike action as ALGON is functioning assiduously on how to implement the new earnings.

According Hon. Ikpokpo, we are committed to ensuring the implementation of the minimum wage across all Grade Levels within the Local Governments and Local Education Authorities, LEAs in no distant time when hopefully the finances of the Councils improves.
